Preparing children for kindergarten involves adjusting to new routines and fostering independence, according to school counselors Elizabeth Hatcher and Brooke Hampton. They emphasize that phasing out nap time is crucial since kindergarten does not include naps. Establishing bedtime and morning routines is also important, with experts suggesting parents start waking children at their school-time schedule a few weeks before the first day. Practicing the route to school several times can also be beneficial.

Parents are encouraged to help children learn to dress themselves, manage coats and shoes, and work on basic skills like tying shoelaces. Socialization is key in preparing for kindergarten, so arranging playdates can help children practice social skills, resilience, and problem-solving.

The kindergarten registration process is conducted online through the Cobb County School District’s ParentVUE system. Required documents include proof of residency, birth verification, immunization records, and health screening forms. ParentVUE also allows parents to track grades, meal payments, and permission slips throughout their child's education.

Additionally, the District offers a "Kindergarten Ride Along" program annually for children and parents to experience a school bus ride together. Schools organize meet-and-greet events before the academic year starts to help families become familiar with the environment. Staying connected through school websites and social media helps parents keep track of important dates and events, making the transition into kindergarten smoother for both children and caregivers.
