Wheeler High School's boys' basketball team has secured its tenth state championship, joining an exclusive group of schools in Georgia with double-digit titles. The Wildcats triumphed over the Newton Rams in a thrilling 6A final at the Macon Coliseum.
The game saw Wheeler taking an early lead, extending it to 14 points during the second quarter. However, Newton responded vigorously, closing the gap to four points by halftime with a remarkable buzzer-beater shot.
Despite a competitive third period that seemed to favor Newton, Wheeler maintained composure under head coach Larry Thompson's guidance. This victory marks Coach Thompson's fourth state title since he began coaching at Wheeler in 2017.
"Winning the state title this season is basically putting the exclamation point on the season," said Coach Thompson. He attributed their success to team unity and accountability both on and off the court.
Wheeler finished their season with only three losses against nationally ranked teams and embarked on a 21-game winning streak starting late December. They avenged an earlier loss to Grayson by defeating them decisively in the Final Four, showcasing their growth throughout the season.
"The total team effort has been our calling card all season," Coach Thompson emphasized. He stressed hard practice and competition as crucial elements of their program's success.
Offensively, Wheeler displayed depth, relying not just on individual stars but on contributions from all players. "We are much tougher to guard when the ball moves," remarked Coach Thompson about his team's scoring strategy.
Coach Thompson expressed gratitude towards his coaching staff, school administration, family, and most importantly, his players and their families for their dedication and support throughout the season.
