The Kell Longhorn Marching Band recently achieved significant recognition at the Conquest of Champions event, held at Allatoona High School. The band earned multiple awards, including the titles of Conquest Grand Champion and overall Gold Division winner. They also secured first place in the AAAAA Division and received accolades for Best General Effect and Best Music Performance.
Their current show, titled "Pop," features a diverse range of themes related to pop culture. It includes classical music from famous movies and musicals alongside iconic tracks by pop legends such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Beyoncé.
Kell Band Director David Roth shared insights into the subjective nature of marching band competitions. "The beauty of marching band is that it is very subjective," he stated. "We can only control what we do, not what other bands do or what a judge focuses on."
Following their performance at Conquest, members of the Longhorn band were visibly moved by their success. "The students walked off the field literally in tears because they knew they just had their best performance of the season to date," said Director Roth.
This year's Kell Marching Band is notable for being the largest in school history with 170 members. Their preparation began during band camp in July, culminating in an outstanding performance that led them to victory on Buccaneer Field.
Director Roth emphasized the importance of self-improvement through competition rather than focusing solely on winning awards. "We are very passionate about using competition as a means to better OURSELVES," he explained.
Despite this focus on personal growth, Director Roth expressed pride in his students' achievements. "We are so incredibly happy for them," he concluded, highlighting both their placements and the lasting memories created through their performances.
