Only 20 teachers from Georgia have been selected to join the Georgia Department of Education’s Teacher Policy Fellowship program. Among them is Lily Motolenich, an ESOL teacher at Clay Harmony Leland Elementary School in Cobb County.
The nine-month fellowship aims to equip educators with the skills to influence education policy. Participants will engage in seminars, workshops, and discussions with policymakers and legislators throughout the school year and into the summer. The program offers insights into how educational policies are crafted and their effects on students and schools.
A highlight of the fellowship is a spring trip to Washington, D.C., where Ms. Motolenich will meet federal education leaders and learn about Congress's role in education. She will collaborate with fellow educators to analyze data, tackle real-world challenges, and create a policy proposal based on her classroom experiences. This proposal will be presented as part of her capstone project.
Ms. Motolenich is recognized for her ability to connect with English learners due to her background as a biliterate educator who overcame language learning challenges. Her commitment to improving student outcomes has earned her state-level recognition from the Georgia Department of Education.
With over ten years of experience in Cobb County schools, including Russell Elementary School and Birney Elementary School, Ms. Motolenich brings valuable expertise to her current role at Clay Harmony Leland.
Principal Gina McClenning commented on Ms. Motolenich's selection: “Through her participation in the Teacher Policy Fellowship program, Ms. Motolenich will gain valuable insights into education policy, which she can use to advocate for students and families effectively. The fellowship will enhance her ability to bring innovative strategies and programs to Clay Harmony Leland Elementary, ensuring her students have access to cutting-edge resources and learning opportunities.”
