Cobb Schools has announced the latest winners of its Athlete of the Week (AOW) program, recognizing outstanding male and female student-athletes for their achievements in sports, academics, and school communities. This initiative is supported by BSN Sports.
This week's honorees are Ethan Garrett from Pope High School and Annika Gomeyac from Walton High School.
Ethan Garrett is a senior pitcher for the Pope Greyhound baseball team. In a recent series against Sequoyah, he achieved his first career no-hitter while allowing only one base-runner through a walk. Ethan outperformed an FSU signee in this match-up. Previously an outfielder, he has transitioned effectively to pitching, setting an example for younger players on and off the field. He plans to attend Georgia Southern University to continue his baseball career.
"Ethan is a true ACE pitcher who gives the team a great chance at achieving victory each time he takes the mound," said Head Coach Chris Turco. "He is a leader who is able to mentor and show the younger generation of Pope Greyhounds how to act in accordance with Pope Baseball culture and how to prepare for success."
Athletic Director Josh Mathews echoed these sentiments: "Pope is a very rigorous academic institution, and he carries over a 3.6 GPA while also excelling at a very high level on the baseball field."
Annika Gomeyac represents Walton as a golfer and recently excelled at the Cobb County Championship with an overall score of 73, winning her individual category by seven strokes. She helped lead her team to victory by four strokes. Annika balances golf with playing violin in her school's orchestra and managing challenging academic courses. She will join the University of Alabama-Birmingham next fall.
"Annika is the leader of our team," said Head Golf Coach Monty Bumper. "Her focus is contagious, and she leads through her performance."
Walton Athletic Coordinator Christopher Jones praised Annika's qualities: "Her combination of talent, intelligence, and discipline makes her an inspiring role model for others."
The achievements of both students exemplify what it means to be top-performing student-athletes in Cobb Schools.
