Lovett Lifers Create New Lives as College Freshmen

The class of 2022 jumped straight into freshman year at college with new peers, classes, and experiences. Some are at enormous state schools, others at small private colleges. Some are close by, others on the other side of the country.

To find out how things are going for them, I reached out to a few recent Lovett grads. I started with my brother Andrew, whose face popped up on my Facetime on a recent evening, er, night, at 11:00 PM. He was wearing an Onward Reserve t-shirt (per usual) with a Texas flag in the back. He was in his room in the Calloway house, which he loves. It has a movie theater, game room, pool, and a lot of space. Luckily for his roommate, Marshal Widicker from Forth Worth, they each have their own room and bathroom.

Andrew, a former Lovett lifer, currently attends the University of Texas business school. He is the only Lovett student from his class going to Texas, so it is definitely out of his comfort zone. “It's weird being the only one from Lovett,” he says, “but nice getting to know new people.” Luckily, he got to know a few people from Atlanta prior to leaving for Austin. He also has already pledged to SAE over the summer, so that has helped him get to know more people.

He was about to go to bed and had been hanging out with friends that day. When I asked him if he misses anything from home besides family, he named our dog Bodie and Waffle House. On the positive side, he has gotten to know new people and tried a lot of new restaurants.

Academically, he feels like Lovett prepared him well and advises others to “get good grades. It makes the application process a lot easier.” He gave a particular shout-out to American studies, one of his favorite classes. “It helped me a lot by teaching me how to write,” he says. Currently, he thinks the classes aren’t too bad but the homework load is more than expected. His hardest class is accounting.

Cate Thompson, a former Lovett lifer like Andrew, attends the University of Southern California. She told me that her favorite thing about California is the abundance of things to do and see. “You can go to the beach, see a comedy show, go hiking, and go explore the thousands of restaurants,” she says. “None of those will ever be canceled because of the rain.” Apparently, every day is perfect weather.

She also thinks Lovett prepared her well. “My favorite class at Lovett was my Global Leadership Class, where we heard from successful business leaders. They talked about how to be great leaders and how they grew the companies they worked for or created,” she states.

Cooper Moog, another Lovett lifer (a common pattern), attends Texas Christian University. She rushed the sorority Tri Delta and loves all the people. She says Lovett “prepared us well when it comes to studying.” Her favorite class at Lovett was Honors Holocaust with Mr. Randolph. While the workload at college is a lot more intense, this also could be due to her major, Pre-Med. Most people, she states, have easier majors and have found college not as challenging.

Clearly, this is a small sample size of recent Lovett grads. But for these three alums, college is going well. They’re staying on top of their classes, making friends, and even finding replacements for Lovett nachos. Case in point: Andrew’s favorite new restaurant is Matts LeRanjaro, a Mexican restaurant. He recommends the steak tacos.
