Pope High School celebrates successful fall sports season with multiple championships

Pope High School has concluded a successful fall sports season, securing three 5A state championships in volleyball and cross country. These achievements were recognized at the December Board of Education meeting.

The Lady Greyhounds volleyball team claimed their sixth championship title, marking their second win in the last three years. The team finished the 2024 season with a record of 36-5 and a 16-game winning streak. Seniors Amanda Vlkovic and Ellis Crawford were named Cobb's Athlete of the Week. Head Community Coach Erica Miller remarked, "This state title was an incredible accomplishment for us."

In cross country, Pope's long-distance runners excelled at the Final 5A race in Carrollton, achieving an overall score of 29 points compared to McIntosh's 152 points. Josie Hutchinson emerged as the individual state champion with a time of 19:15.40. Head Coach Cathi Monk stated, "Winning the state title was actually a relief."

The flag football team also performed well, having won last year's Division 3 state championship and continuing their success by winning Area 6 this year. They advanced to play Peach County in the quarterfinals on December 9. Junior QB Abbey Bensman received recognition as Division 3 Area 6 Player of the Year.

Athletic Director Josh Mathews commented on the school's achievements: "All these teams have been impressive, exhibiting top-level focus and determination."

Additionally, Pope's Class of 2025 has seen 17 student-athletes sign National Letters of Intent to continue their sports careers at collegiate levels. This group represents ten sports across various divisions.

Mathews expressed pride in these accomplishments: "Watching these young women and men obtain this highly sought-after opportunity to play at the next level has been a true treat."
